We found our hostel perched atop “Vieux Lyon” after taking various subways and even the funicular. The view from the top was stunning, with a panoramic picture of the city. I later find that my top bed bunk has a window just for me: I’m woken each morning by this view as the sun rises—amazing.

Welcome to La Cigale et la Fourmi.

A maze of narrow stairways and halls, la Cigale is in the suburbs of Marseilles, about half an hour away from the train station by metro and bus. It’s surrounded by orange and pink Mediterranean-style houses and there are alleyways with drying laundry hanging out windows.

Tucked away in the fairly affluent neighbourhood of St. Alban, the hostel in Basel is straight out of a European spy movie. It was hard to find –hiding behind a church through a maze of alleys and cobblestone streets. We stumbled upon it after seeing the glow of the sign through the evening light.
